SERIOUS TRAMWAY ACCIDENT.
CHRISTCHURCE, January 12. George Palethorpe, a middle-aged man, employed as head day porter at Warner's Hotel, was run over at New Brighton last night by the 10.40 tram for town, and sustained very serious injuries, his^ left arm and leg being severed from the body. Palethorpe was standing on the footpath as the tram moved out of the | New Brighton terminus, and as ne | had friends on the car he boarded the trailer from the wrong side, and was confronted by the iron folding-gate. At the same moment his hat blew off, and leaning out to look' after it, his head struck a centre-pole As he passed and he fell under the trailer wheels. He was dragged some distance before the care was stopped, .and it was then found that his left arm and left leg were completely severed. Members' of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, who were in' attendance at the New Brighton Gala, gave first aid, and Dr. Stevens was also summoned. He ordered Palethorpe's removal to the Christchurch Hospital and he was taken away in, a taxi-cab. On arrival at the hospital he was immediately operated upon, and although he came through the operation he was in a very low condition. . Palethorpe is a married man, with j three children. He resides at Smith's] Road, Woolston. ! Later.—Palethorpe, who was injured in the tram accident at New Brighton, last night, died in the Hospital this morning .
