A charge of cruelly illtreating ducks by overcrowding them, in crates, was brought s gainst E. Nottingham in the A*uckiand Police Court, last week. Evidence was given that 200 ducks were sent to Christchurch in five crates, the space allowed each duck being 6in. On arrival at their destination, the majority were found to be dead through suffocation. Defendant explained that he only had 25 minutes to pack the birds, and did not notice they were overcrowded. Mr C'utton, S.M., said it was a case-of-carelessness, but public attention must be called to it. A fine of £1 and 28s costs was imposed.
