RACING & GAMBLING.
A PULPIT DENUNCIATION
During tho course of his sermon at 1 the Church of Christ-on Sunday evening, Mr F. W. Greenwood delivered a strong indictment against horse-racing and. the associated evil of gambling. The preacher referred to the enormous sum of money that had been speculated on the totalisator at Christchurch during the Grand National meeting and the trotting meeting/and he scouted the argument that hor&e-racmg was an essential factor, in.the breeding of good horses. The whole of the credit for the , improvement in the breeding of •horses was due to the. Agricultural and 'Pastoral Associations, which were important national institutions that should receive a. larger measure of support on the part of the general public. In conclusion, Mr Greenwood recounted an incident that j had occurred in Australia some .years ago, in which he had been instrumental in doing a kindness to a jockey. Before leaving Australia, Mr Greenwood said he was approached by the jockey in question, who said that ho was not in a nosition to return the kindness, ."but," ho said, '" I will give you some good advice. Never put; any money on horse-racing,contests, because they are all more or less swindles." *
