IMPRESSIVE OBSEQUIES.

SYDNEY, August 20. ■The preliminary obsequies in connection with Cardinal Moran's funeral were held yesterday. Tbey included a Pontifical Requiem High Mass. A very large, number of people attended, including representatives of the Government, the Anglican Primate,,, and several members of the Ministry,' the Lord Mayor, and Mr Redmond, M.P. Several prelates of the Roman Catholic Church participated in the service, which was of a most solemn character.. -' ■

In the course of an eulogy of Cardinal Moran, Archbishop Kelly said:— "Who does not feel his loss in loving Ireland, his motherland, and in Australia] his adopted country? He loved every individual citizen at Home and here, and if possible he had more tender sentiment and regard for the interests of those outside his fold than for those within it." Archbishop Kelly said that as-'successor, to 'Archbishop V-aug-han aud Cardinal Moran, he would try to obliterate the impression conveyed in certain publications that Cardinal Moran dealt .'harshly with Archbishop Vaughah's relations in regard to the tatter's interment. Cardinal Moran had informed him that he had paid the full bill for Archbishop Vaughan's funeral expenses. ' Archbishop Kelly advised people to let. the matter rest; till the Day of Judgment. It is estimated that nearly a quarter of a million people! viewed Cardinal Moran's funeral ■ : procession. The hearse containing the remains left St.; Mary's Cathedral, arid proceeded via Liverpool, Elizabeth,, and College: streets, and. thence returned to the Cathedral. It was followed by Church dignitaries, clergy, members of Catholic societies, and guilds in regalia, eluding a representative of the New Zealand Hibernian Society, children of Catholic schools, aud the Irish Rifle regiment. Representatives of the Gover-nor-General and the State Governor, Mr Hughes, representing the Commonwealth Ministry, several members of the State Ministry, official heads of departments, arid many public men, were present at the obsequies as^, a token of respect to the departed. An immense crowd thronged the Cathedral. Archbishop Kelly performed the last" rites as the coffin was placed in the vault. The service .was simple and most solemn and impressive. The choir rendered subdued dirges, combined with the tolling of the Cathedral bell.
