NEW ZEALAND FARMERS' UNION.
♦— !-__ CHRISTCHURCH, December 15. A meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury branch of the New ■ Zealand Farmers' Union was held this! afternoon. Amongst those present were: Messrs F. Frampton and G. W. i Leadley. , -■ The Ashburton branch forwarded a copy of a resolution requesting the executive to take suitable steps to protect farmers' interests when the dispute between the Farm Labourers' Union and the threshing machine owners was before the Arbitration Court. The letter was received. Mr F. G. Horrell read a resume prepared by himself of the replies from the different Education Boards upon the present system of conducting the sixth standard examination m the primary schools. He condemned the system of promotion by head teachers and objected that the inspectors' reports gave only a general average of the different standards, and made no mention of individual candidates. Unless parents could ascertain the weak and strong subjects of their children they could not decide for what calling they were best fitted. On the motion of Mr Horrell the matter was referred to the dominion executive. A circular letter was received from the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association regarding the proposed conference on the meat export trade of the dominion, which it was suggested should be held m Wellington m the last week m January, 1910. The executive was asked to appoint delegates to represent it at the conference. Messrs Leadley, Hall and Evaue were —minted to represent the Union at the conference.
