Yesterday was the shortest day of the year, according to the calendar, but owing to the mildness of the season the shortness of the days has not been very noticeable. Owing to the impaired health of Miss Lovell, the lady who has been giving lectures throughout the colony on the art of cooking by gas, the demonstrations previously announced to be given in Ashburton will not now take place.
