OPENING OF NIGERIA.
It has just been reported from London that Mr Winston Churchill, Un-der-Secretary for the Colonies, states that the Government has decided to construct a pioneer railway from Baro to Kano, in Nigeria, a distance of 400 miles. The cost of the work, is put down at £1,230,000, and the line will open territory towards Lake Tchad. The Nigeria Protectorate is in West Africa, and includes the lower basin of the Niger. It has a population of between 30,000,000 and 40,000,000, and is very fertile; A High Commissioner controls the administration of the Protectorate, which has been divided into 16 provinces—-Borgu, Illorin, Kontagora, Bida, Kabba, Lower and Upper Benuo, Middle Niger, Muri, Sokoto, Katsena, Kano, Yola, Bautshi, and Basas, each under a resident. The inland regions produce cotton, indi-go, rubber, hides and ivory, while minerals are stated to abound in certain parts. It is stated that Northern Nigeria alone could produce all the raw cotton that Lancashire requires, provided the transport difficulty were met h,y the construction of railways.
