PRESENTATION AT MAYFIELD.
_In connection with the departure of Miss M. L. Hight from Mayfield school, to take up sole charge at Lyndhur < there was a crowded gathering at Airfield on Friday evening; in fact, tik Methodist Church, the place of meeting;, could not accommodate all who were in attendance.
Mr W. Oakley, chairman of tho School Committee, presided, and in speaking of- Miss Hight's worts as a ceacher at Mayfield school for the past eight and a half years, referred in warm terms to her many good qualities. The programme for the evening comprised songs by Mrs T. 0. Sewell, Misses Oakley, Withell, Burgess and E. Whitng, and Messrs J. Dellow and F. Jarnan, also songs by the school children inder the leadership of the master. Mr G. Murdoch and Mr C. W. With--311, in addressing the meeting on behajf of the day school, eulogised Miss Hight's capabilities as a teacher, especially her kind manner with the young children under her charge. They referred .to her unostentatious self-denial, and her ivillingness to assist in all matters that tended for the welfare of the school, the churches and matters of the district generally.
Mr W. Gallagher and the Rev. Mr Blakiston also spoke. Mr W. Oakley, representing tho School Committee, presented Miss Slight- with a travelling nig and a 31adstone bag; Mr J. Dellow, representing the Methodist Church and Sunday School, with a dressing case; the Rev. W. Ham, representing the Presbyterian Sunday School, with an Oxford Leaclier's Bible, and a small hand-bag; Mr G. Beckett, _ representing the Church )f England, with-a silver tea. service: ':he day school children, with a beautiful ulver-mounted umbrella; and Mr Thos. Thos. McDowell','representing the Mayleld Mutual Improvement Society, with i purse. Miss Hight feelingly thanked all her friends and stated that she had only ried to do her duty. Votes of. thanks were accorded to all vho had helped towards the success of i;;he meeting, and to the ladies who had urpplied refreshments for the supper. Mr Muller and Miss Withell acted aa accompanists one the organ. After nipper, Sankey's hymn " God be with you till we meet again," was sung, and 'hen the young people departed to the schoolroom, where dancing was kept up "■-ill morning.
At Mayfield school, on Friday after"loon, on the occasion of Miss Hight 'caving to take up her duties at LyndHurston the Ist of August, the children presented their departing mistress with \ small token of their affection. The iresentation was made by Master ThoTias Corbett and Myrtle- Withell, who '-landed Miss Hight a handsome silk urn Miss Hight feelingly responded. Mid thanked the boys and girls for their handsome gift. Some school songs Tere sung, and when the boys had gi"en three ringing cheers for Miss Hight. he school closed.
