The Crops.
One of the finest crops of wheat in the Methven district may be seen in a paddock on the Mount Hutt Koad, belonging to Mr John Holmes, of Viewmount. There are about 300 acres in the paddock, and the yield is estimated to go sixty bushels to the acre. A couple of days ago the crop looked in capital condition, and was almost ready for the reaper. The oat crops on Mr D, Cameron's Springfield Estate are now nearly all cut, and a good deal h in stack. A commencement was made yesterday with the cutting of the wheat crops, We hear that Mr Thomas Nee, of Calrnhrao, has a fine paddock of wheat almost ready for reaping, which is estimated to yield at least 70 bushels to the acre, i Harvesting operations are in full swing along the Methven railway line, cutting, stocking, stacking, and threshing proceeding in the various paddocks. This applies mainly to oats, although several paddocks of wheat are in stook. From the closeness of the stooks and the appearance of the grain still uncut, the yields of both cereals promise to he phenomenal. A good denl of the wheat crops are still on the green side, but a day or two of sunshine should fully ripen them. »
