An Unsustained Charge.

At the Police Court thiß morning—before ths Hon. Major Steward and Mr David Thomas, Justices of the Peace—Roland M>lntosh—charged with obtaining money under false pretences from Mr Blakiscon, Wellington, by means of a valueless cheque —who had been remanded from Monday, was again brought up. Mr Outhbertson appeared for accused. —Sergeant Miiller, in evidence, produced telegrams which had passed between himself and the authorities in Wellington, which showed that the accused's former statement was perfectly correct. This statement was that his brother, Alexander Mclntoah, manager of at Danevirke bank, had authorised him while looking for work to draw cheques on that bank to the amount of £8, or more if circumstances necessitated. He had consequently written out a cheque for £3, and Mr Blakiston, a Wellington solicitor, had cashed it for him. It appears that about the same time Alexander Mclntosh had to leave his bank to relieve at Patea, and when the cheque for £3 was presented it was dishonored. Mr Blakiston had immediately instituted proceedings, resulting in the young fellow being arrested in Ashburton. He explained matters, and in answer to police enquiries his brother substantiated the statement and guaranteed payment of the cheque. The Hon. Major Steward said that the information would be dismissed, and that accused would leave the Court without a reflection on his character- At the same time he expected the case would be a lesson to him not to give cheques in future without being absolutely certain that they would be met.
