PJSR PRESS ASSOCIATION. London, October 12. The wool sales have closed. Prices were steady and competition brisk up to .the last. American buyers have taken 6000 bales. The fifth series commences on November 24, the list closing on November 22. The first series next year | will open on January 24, the list not being limited to any quantity. The second series commences on April 5, and is limited to 450,000 bales. At the series just closed 298,000 bales of wool were sold. As compared with July, prices for good merino were unchanged, medium merino a farthing to a halfpenny lower; crossbreds, greasy, were unchanged ; scoured lambs a halfpenny lower. The prospects of good prices at next series are fair. Silver 3s 2fd. The total quantity of wheat and flour aflo%t for the United Kingdom is 2,012,000 quarters and for the Continent 904,000 quarters. Bank of New Zealand shares, new issue, £7 10s.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have received the following cable message, dated London, October 12 :— Wool—The sales closed firmly this day. c?ince close of last sales superior scoured merino, greasy merino medium and inferior, washed merino, are |d per lb lower ; scoured merino, medium and inferior, are and Id per lb lower ; coarse greasy crossbred is par to |d per lb lower ; greasy crossbred lambs have declined Id per lb since close of last sales. Other descriptions unchanged. The total quantity sold during the past sales is 298,000 bales, of which 140,000 have been taken for the Continent and 6000 bales for America. Ie is estimated that 34,000 bales have been held over for future disposal.
