The " London Times " correspondent at Novo-Toherkask could not get his despatches conoerning the Czar's visit to the Don Cossacks sent unmutilated over the wires owing to the Russian censorship. The best parts of them were suppressed. The ohief of the telegraph office stormed at him for not sending his aocount by post,, declaring it a orime to send such long letters by telegraph, One of the Scotch papers has reoently contained several letters on the birth place of Pontius Pilate, one writer aotually maintaining that he was born at Garth Castle, m Perth* shire, a legend which it was attempted to support by the statement that his father was ltoman Governor of Perthshire. The writer seems not to have known that the Romans did not. invade Caledonia till nearly fifty years aftev the oruoifoion.
