A SMUGGLER'S DEVICE.
The ingenuity of smugglers, writes « GeDova correspondent of the Daily News has never perhaps been more strikingly illu-strated thin it wis a few day* ago on the Swiss-IMian frontier. An innocent* looking waggoneer, with a waggon load of cheese, arrived at the Italian Custom House at Ohiasso.' The cheese weighed altogether 3 tons, and the waggoner, who was ' childlike and bland,' whin' led blithely as he duly presented his papers, which certified that he was employed by the ficm of— to convey the cheese, which formed part only of a email order, to its purchasers at Marignao. Tne paper wai examined and found en regie, and before resuming his journey the waggoner stepped into a neighboring cafe, for the day was hot. Bat the delay for refresh* rnents was destined to prove fatal to the waggoner's hopes, for during his absence a douaoiea's suspicions were aroused, and he examined the cheeses. They proved to b? not cheeses at all but solid, compaot rolls of tobaooo, a.rtful'y done up m cement ; this, aga<n, was covered with caavas, which was painted to represent cheese. Of course, the find' was insUntly confiscated, and the blithe waggoner was transferred from the c >mforts of the cafe to fcha hardships of a j til.
