raised by Mr Coates • (Opposition Kai para l . Mr. Coates said m -me objected t< the principles involved in raising in creased taxation and the necessity for it was beyond all question. He pointed out that a number of very powerful in stitutions in the country were making lager beer while the little struggling brewers (laughter) were not able to take advantage of the reduction in the gravity because they did not have the equipment to make lager beer.
“The Government is not unmindful of the fact that the change may be of greater benefit to some breweries than others.” replied the Minister of Customs, Mr. Xordmeyer. There was nothing to stop brewers from brewing beer of a specific gravity of 1040 but they would have to pay an extra 4d. a gallon. Answering other questions, Mr. Nordmeyer said the increased taxation was proportionately the same on cigarettes and cigarette tobacco. y
