RUGBY FOOTBALL
Wellington Championship Opens PROMISING PLAYERS Many players of promise, if not in the best physical condition, were seen in action on Saturday afternoon, when the Wellington Rugby Union opened its championship competitions, with 20 teams in the senior grade! There was a great reshuffling of players, as many of tin members of club teams last season art this year taking the field with services' fifteens, of which seven were in action on Saturday. Of these the most impressive was the _ A.A. Battery team, which fielded a strapping set of forwards, led by J. Brownlie, the well-known Hawke's Bay representative player, and a serviceable rearguard, in which Holt, another Hawke’s Bay representative, played an outstanding game at five-eighths. The Battery fifteen out played the Army team, which had a much lighter pack than last season, by 24 points to 14, at Athletic Park. That the Army players are not yet physically fit enough for football was evident from the fact that the ambulance men were called upon no fewer than seven times to attend to minor injuries, and two of the players had to be carried off the field on stretchers. ... Of the other services’ teams, Seatoun. A.S.C., and A.N.A. Headquarters performed creditably, and should settle down into good sides with combination. Of the regular club teams, University, Pe tone, Athletic, Eastbourne and Wellington College Old Boys proved that they can still muster respectable sides. With such a large number of senior teams, it is not surprising that some did’ not come up to senior standard, Pirates. Onslow and Miramar particularly coming in for heavy defeats. After three fur ther series of games, the senior teams will be regraded, and those that remain in the top half should be strong enough to make the senior competition this sea son highly interesting. Following are the results:— Senior Grade. A.A. Battery v. Army, at Athletic Park —A.A. Battery, 24 (tries by Dais (2). Troy.
