Camp News (Northern Command)

Camp News was a printed weekly camp publication starting in 1939 with a goal of becoming ‘the voice of the men of Trentham’ (08 December 1939: 2) during World War II.

It was published in Wellington by printers Stewart Lawrence and Co. Ltd and featured local and international news, camp notices, photographs, cartoons and local advertisements.

By 1940 Camp News, having become an Army, Navy and Airforce Weekly, split into two editions, a central edition with Wellington related content, and a northern edition with Auckland related content aimed at the Papakura Military camp.

In December 1940 Camp News Northern and Central were combined back into one title to become Camp News National. The title continued until it was instructed to shut down by the Ministry of Supply in January 1943 due to a shortage of paper.

Camp News, Camp News Central and Camp News National follow the same numbering and have therefore been combined as one listing in Papers Past. You can find Camp News Northern Command as a separate title.
