Army Team At Napier Rugby football of a good standard was witnessed when the Army, team, representing the J Central - Military District (third echelon), met Hawke's* Bay representatives- in ' a game on McLean Park,
Napier, on 13th inst. The result was a i draw, 16-hll, the progress of the scoring , being such that the 2600 spectators were kept at a pitch of excitement throughoutFirst blood went to the Army, Im ay kicking. a penalty goal soon after play began. The home side evened the account not long after when Thomas kicked a penalty goal also. ' Hawke’s-Bay gave the [ Army team a hard time for a while, but they were unable to cap their efforts. Then the visitors took a hand, and the first try of the match came when Sherratt scored from a back movement, Finlay converting. They brought their tally up to 11 when Finlay kicked a penalty goal. Just before half-time, the Bay took a hand, and aJ try by Jackson from a forward scramble converted .by Thomas, made the score. the interval, Army 11. Hawke's Bay 8. V
The Army opened the second spell energetically,'; and Logan finished .off a back movement with a try, which Finlay converted from a difficult angle. Taking matters into their own hands, the home forwards swept down the field in a rush which was too much for the defenders, and Brownlie fell on the ball for a . try. The last and equalizing try of the match was also Brownlie’s, after he had .been fed from a scrum by the Bay half-back, Clothier. Dyer converted. With the scores even, and not a great deal of time left to play, /both, sides strove hard to add to their scores. The pace was fast, with -backs and forwards endeavouring to find a weakness, but the score remained unaltered.
