Immensity of London.
Some extremely interesting figures bearing on the immensity of the capital are furnished b5 r the statistical abstract for London for the present year, just published. From this compilation we learn that the population of the administrative county of London is 4,601,985, living in 619,338 separately rated houses. To feed this vast multitude £10,742,000 had to be spent during the year on imported corn, £11,249,578 on dead meat, and £3,522,697 on live oxen, sheep, and pigs. The tea consumed costs {g, 541, 664, the coffee £2,476,999, and the sugar £5,137,331 ; and while £4,237,692 was disbursed for butter, and £3,212,772 for cheese, the people had 730,600,000 letters and 147,900,000 post-cards delivered to them in the course of the twelve months, while they sent away 28,216,000 telegrams and paid income tax on £300,976,604. A little consideration of these figures may convey to those unfamiliar with the metropolis some idea of its immensity.
