Kaikoura

(From an occasional correspondent.) It is worthy of record that the young men of the parish have several time done most important work for both the school and the convent. They have carted a large quantity of shingle for the walks 'and other portions of the children's playground— a muchdeeded improvement. They ha\e also cut down and' chopped for the school a thick grove of pines that had 'become troublesome to the Sisters, and dangerous to their health, because of their obstructing sun and air. fa The niche, left empty for some time over the front) door of the chur-h, has been filled by a fine statue of the Sacred Heart, the generous gift of Mr. William bmyth, of Ludstone. It is time to make this tardy acknowledgement of so fine and appropriate a gift to the iSacred Heart Church. The statue has been in position for some couple of years. The same devoted member of the congregation gave the altar, which the Arohbishop declared was ' the most effective altar in jS T ew Zealand.' j. The Catholics of Kaikoura have exerted 1 themselves to good l effect since Easter. The most indifferewt wayfarer cannot but notice that very marked 1 -improve--mends have been effected. The church and presbyt-ery look brighter and handsomer than ever before They needed painting— roofs, as well as walls ana windows Mr. W. Cook, the contractor, has fulfilled his contract to the entire satisfaction of the community. Indeed the painting; has been so well and artistically done as ' to make the buildings seem different structures Dif-^ ferent colors;, are blended with excellent effect by superior workmanship.. The windows Jif the chsurch. and presbytery- ate.... picked out to perfection; and the pal i\ ' dull roofs look warm and new with their beautiful coat of red. New gates have also came into evidence,*' and others have undergone a clange similar to the' buildings. , Within the last three wcekn there have been several mleetings of the parishioners, to initiate a movement towards the holding of a bazaar .at Christmas in aid of the convent. The work has been taken uo with commendable zeal. All the ladien are hard <. at work, preparing for what is sure to be a most . successful ivndertakiug. It is many years since an at-tempt-of this kind has been made at Kaikoura to raise money for any purpose. Indeed, the people have always done -their work, and heavy work withal, without recourse cither to art unions or bazaars. The purpose ot the present movement is to raise funds fcr the erection of a new convent. The Sisters of the Mission have already executed some very superior work for the coming bazaar. Strong committees of ladies and gentlemen of The congregation have been "formed, and the initial stcpa were a hopeful augury of success.
