Another of those enjoyable and successful sicial gatherings in aid of local church and .school works, promoted by Mr. Campbell and his energetic committee at Addington, was gncm on last Friday evening. The Rev. Fathers Ainsworth, S.M., and Graham, S.M., ai'e at piesent on a visit to Canterbury. The former preached at St. Joseph's, Lyttelton, on last Sunday morning, and at St. Mary's, Manchester street, in the evening ; and the latter preached at St. Joseph's, Lyttelton, on Sunday eAening. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Particular Council, Society o( St. Vincent cie Paul was .-eld at St. Joseph's, Lyttelton, on last Monday evening, when an amount of correspondence from the Superior Council (Sjdney) and elsewhere recened attention. Reports from the various conferences indicated satisfactory progress. Gratitude was expressed towards several donors of a supply of Catholic and other suitable literature for distribution in conned ion with the Mission to Catholic Seamen, with the hope that the same generosity may be continued. The next meeting, which will also be a quarterly one, is to be held at St. Mary's, Manchester street, Christchurch, on August 6. The third, and most successful competitive debate of the present series in connection with the Christchurch Catholic Club was earned out on last Tuesday evening in the presence of upwards of fifty members and visitors. The president, Mr. J. R. Ilayward, occupied the chau, and Messrs. H. Dobbin and Sub-In-spector Dwjer iilled most capably the >-osifciora of judges. The rival claims of the monarchical and Republican forms of gove rum en t we-ie \igorously debated. Mr. J. J. Wilson opened in ia\oi of monarchy, and was supported by Mr. R. Mc-Namara. Republicanism was ably advocated by the ilev. Father Peoples, assisttd by Mr M. O'Reilly. After a careful summing up the judges allotted the former side 120 marks and the latter 130. The annual examination of the Cathedral Boys' school, under the Marist Biolhers, was conducted "on June 18 and 19 by Mr. E. K. Mulgan, Inspector of the North Canterbury Board ot Education. In regard to the compulsoiy .subjects taught the report is gncm a; ' satisfactory 'in four instances, ' good,' ' fair to good,' 'moderate to good,' and ' .sat l.siactory to t,ood' in four other instances, whilst ' satisfactory ' and 'fair to satisfactoiy ' is bracketed again.st other subjects. Certificates of competency were granted in Standard VI. to nine pupils, and of proficiency 3i\, the average age of those successful being 13 years nine months. This c'ass was composed of nineteen pupils. A very fair proportion of the punils of the other standards were piomotul, especially from among the higher classes.
