(From our own correspondent.)
April 20
The Catholics of Waimate celebrated Easter Monday by holding a picnic at Downs. Although a wet morning, the special train, which left Waimate at 10 a.m., was well patronised. Once through the gorge things took a decided change, and a beautiful morning greeted us on the Downs side of the hills. A programme of sports was gone through, which included items for the tiny children to the trained athletes. Amongst tho principal items were the altar boys' race (won by Master 11. Hickev), old boys' race (won by .James Quinn). A tug of war created much excitement During the day tho picnic was isited by Mr. J. F. Douglas. r I he Rev. Father Regnault, in a happy speech, thanked Mr. Douglas for the use of his paddock, etc Mr. Douglas suitably responded, adding- that he was only too pleased to give liis paddock on si.eh an occasion, and hoped that it would not be the last time he would have the pleasure of doing so A start was made for home, which was reached about 6 p.m , one and all having enjoyed a \ cry pleasant outing Special thanks are due to the various committees who helped to make the picnic a success At a meeting held on Sunday, April 20, it was decided to make it an annual affair.
