Theft Otherwise than from Dwellings and Shops.

(See Police Gazette, 1903, page 193.) Cambridge. —Ernest Lowther, charged with theft from W. J. Andrews, has been arrested by Constable G. Macartney, Auckland police.

Wanganui. — Sydney Cunningham is charged on warrant with theft, about 30th March last, of a bicycle, value £25 (recovered), the property of the Canada Cycle and Motor Company. Description: About twenty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 6 in. high, medium build, fair complexion, small ginger moustache only, light brown or auburn hair; dressed in old light-tweed suit. He obtained the bicycle on the hire system, and exchanged it for a horse, saddle, and bridle.

Carterton.— Gordan Hughan, engineer, reports stolen, on the 6th ultimo, a gentlemen’s Star bicycle, No. 3971, reversible handle-bar, one grip missing, J in. roller chain, Brooks saddle, Dunlop tires ; value £lO. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Herbert Car Hedge, who hired the bicycle, but has failed to return it. Description : Supposed colonial, labourer, twenty-five years of age, 5 ft. Bin. high, stout build, dark complexion, dark hair and eyes, peculiar unsettled look, nervous twitching of eyes, full round face, broad square shoulders, walks with head to one side, top off middle finger of right hand. Was a member of the Salvation Army at Petone and Carterton.

Upper Hutt.— James Hagan, caretaker, reports stolen from the Trentham Rifle Range, on the 6th instant, a 10-gallon copper with large hole in bottom ; value, 10s. Suspicion attached to Peter Dickson. Description: A hawker and bottle-gatherer, about fifty years of age, about 5 ft. 11 in. high, dark swarthy complexion, long dark beard, dirty appearance, narrow eyes ; drives a roan or a grey horse in a green express.

Christchurch. — Allan Reid is charged on warrant with theft, between the Bth and 20th ultimo, of £9O, the moneys of Knight and Checkley, commission agents. Description : Colonial, clerk, eighteen years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, very fair complexion and hair, slight build ; dressed in a blue suit, cap to match, white shirt and stand-up collar. Offender was employed by the above firm, and appropriated the money on various occasions when intrusted to take it to the bank.

Christchurch. —Patrick Francis Hyland, farmer, Rangiora, reports stolen from him, when drunk, on the night of the 7th instant, three £SO notes on the Bank of Australasia, Nos. 294, 304, and 346 ; ninety-nine £lO notes on the Bank of Australasia, numbers ranging from 2401 to 2499 ; and one £5 note and three £1 notes, numbers unknown.

Christchurch.— Mrs. Thomas, No. 57, Colombo Street, reports stolen from the Theatre, on the 30th ultimo, a ladies’ gold-mounted mother-of-pearl opera-glasses, “ W. T. to N. S. T., January 19th, 1888,” engraved on them; value, £5. Identifiable.

Fairlie. —Thomas Scott, blacksmith, reports stolen from him, on the 7th instant, a gold bracelet set with five diamonds and six rubies ; the bracelet tapers down narrow at the clasp : value, £ls. Identifiable.

Gore. —Harold O. Haggit, law clerk, reports stolen, on the Bth ultimo, a gentlemen’s Record free-wheel bicycle, maker Cook, Howlison, and Co., Dunedin, No. 551 on tubing under the saddle, 26 in. frame, thumb-brake, a spring broken in saddle; value, £l6. Identifiable.

Invercargill. —James Burgess, engine-fitter, care of Johnston and Sons, reports stolen from the Zealandia Hall, Esk Street, on the 14th or 15th ultimo, a semi-portable engine model, about 6 in. long, boiler made of Muntz metal, three sides of the fire-box of copper and one of Muntz metal, gaugeglass cracked at top, fly-wheel has lead rim, copper spokes, boss of brass or Muntz metal; value, £6O. Identifiable.

Perth.— Henry Dutton is charged on warrant issued at Perth with the theft of £27 10s., the moneys of the Railway Department. Description: About forty years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, dark hair and moustache, small dark sideboards, thin visage, dark complexion, late railway stationmaster at Bayswater ; generally wears a light-tweed coat and soft-felt hat.
