Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

Thames. —The Kauri Timber Company report that between the 18th and 20th ultimo their premises at Kauaeranga were broken into, and the following stolen: Five ordinary timber-jacks with iron stocks, branded “S.S.M. C 0.,” value £6 each ; two 6 ft. lightning-saws, value 12s. 6d. each ; and an axe, well worn, value ss.

Thames. —The Kauri Timber Company’s two timber-jacks which were stolen from a punt on the Piako River were branded “ S.S.M. C 0.,” not “ K.T.G.,” as previously reported.

Taradale (Napier),— Stolen, on the 19th or 20th ultimo, from the Newstead sheep-station, a two-wheeled gig, painted dark navy-blue, green stripes on wheels and on shafts, board at back of seat split, a piece broken out and a new piece put in, value £l7, the property of Wirihana Aperabama; a double-reined bridle, witn two large rings, nickel-plated bit, branded “W.H.N.” inside reins and headstall, value 155., the property of Wi Nuku ; a similar bridle, branded “ H.N.,” value 155., the property of Pene ; and a set of light buggy harness, black colour, partly worn, with silver-plated buckles, brass buckles to blinkers and reins, value £4 10s., the property of Peni Nuku.

Taradale (Napier).— Stealing from Joseph Hatwell’s paddock. H. M. Rosenberg, alias Lawton, who sold the stolen fork, has returned to the colony, and is now living in College Street, Wellington. Owing to lapse of time, no further proceedings have been taken.

Wanganui. —Judah Henry Keesing reports stolen, on the 22nd or 23rd ultimo, about 55 ft. of £ in. rubber hose, joined in centre with a piece of brass piping, and copper-wire; branch, with gas-tap, at end ; value, £1 15s.

Palmerston North. —Solomon Abrahams, pawnbroker, reports that on the 17th or 18th ultimo his shop was broken into, and the following stolen : A double-cased imitation gold keyless watch, No. 281, “Century, U.5.A.,” on inside of case ; a ladies’ 18-carat gold ring, diamond in centre; a

ladies’ 18-carat gold ring, set with a diamond and sapphires ; an 18-carat gold ring with buckle ; a 9-carat gold ring, with red stone in centre; two gold wedding-rings, and a gold pencil-case, marked “Fenton”; mostly all second-hand: total value, about £lO,

Palmebston Nobth. —William Henry Oowper, gardener, reports stolen from his wash-house, on the 18th or 19th ultimo, three white-dimity toilet-oovers, trimmed with white lace, 4 in. long ; two white blankets, one broad, and three narrow blue stripes at each end, in fair order; a trap-rug, dark check, with fringe at each end, well worn; a white-damask table-cloth, with red border, and fringe at each end: a tin of kerosene, a kerosene-pump, and some soap : value, in all, £2 10s.

Wellington. —Joseph Saunders, contractor, reports stolen from his office at the Railway Wharf, on the 18th ultimo, ninety-six £1 notes on the Union Bank of Australia, ten half-sovereigns, and £5 9s. 6d. in silver. (See Police Gazette , 1899, page 23.) Nelson. —George Henry Reeves’s bicycle has been found in possession of Daniel Smith, who cannot, however, be connected with stealing it. Smith was recently convicted of a similar theft, and was released on twelve months’ probation.

Ashbubton.— Max Friedlander, merchant, reports stolen from his yard, on the 25th or 26th ultimo, a Mosgiel rug, brown colour, fancy plaid lining ; value, £lO.

Timaetj. —Frederick Pigeon, contractor, reports stolen from his premises, on the 19th ultimo, a set of silvermounted dog-cart harness, nearly new, design of thistle on mounting, old kicking-strap on breeching ; value, £7.

Milton. —Alexander Bell, farm-servant, Clarendon, reports stolen from an outhouse, on the 23rd or 24th ultimo, a jetblack collie dog, very long rough hair all over body and head, answers to the name of “ Sweep ”; value, £6. Suspicion attached to John Riley, a native of New Zealand, about twenty-three years of age, about 5 ft. 11 in. high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair, fair moustache only, round features ; dressed, when last seen, in a dark-tweed sac-suit, and soft dark-felt hat. Supposed to have gone to Canterbury, mustering. His parents reside at Otakia, Taieri County.

Balclutha. —William Wills, rabbit agent, Clinton, reports stolen from the Railway Hotel, Balclutha, on the 28th October last, a parcel, containing a men’s new dark-brown tweed suit, size 5, tailor-made, value, £4 10s.

Invebcaegill. —The Railway Department report stolen from the goods-shed, about the 29th September last, a wooden case, addressed “Car and Wagon Inspector, Invercargill,” containing twelve coir mats for railway-carriages, each about 2 ft. 6 in. by 18in., four of them having holes in the centres to fit spittoons; value, £3 2s. The property of the New Zealand Government.

Invebcaegill. —The Railway Department report stolen from the goods-shed, on the 15th or 16th ultimo, a samplecase of whiskey (eight bottles), case marked “ H.C.” over “ D.” in a square, over “ & Co.” ; value, £1 14s. 6d. The property of Henry Carswell and Co.
