Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland.— James Farrant (name probably fictitious) is charged on warrant with having, on the 22nd ultimo, stolen from Jervois House, Wellesley Street, two pairs of cricketing - pants, value 10s.; the property of Thomas Hetherington. Recovered. Offender is twenty - seven or twenty-eight years of age, 5 ft. Sin. or 9 in. high, dark complexion, small dark moustache, medium build, small mole on lower jaw ; dressed in a dark-blue serge coat and vest, greyish pants, hard black hat, and brown tan canvas shoes.

Auckland. —Emily Parker, daughter of the licensee, Aurora Hotel, reports stolen, on the 18th ultimo, a ladies’ gold band-ring, “ Emily ” engraved on top, and “ W.A ’’ inside, chain and bell attached; a ladies’ gold ring, set with three diamonds; and a gold bracelet, cable pattern, locket, with “ E.P.” thereon attached : Value, £9. Auckland. —Stealing from Jin Gott’s dwelling: Ethel Annie Brown has been arrested by Constable H. P. Kennedy for this offence, and committed for trial. One of the stolen rings recovered and traced to her possession. The other articles not yet traced.

Helensville. —Elizabeth Graham Reid, licensee, Kaipara Hotel, Helensville, reports stolen from her dwelling, on the 23rd ultimo, a gold brooch, formed by two earrings, each about the size of a sixpence, small diamond in centre of each, with gold tracing in the shape of a Maltese cross; value, £3. Suspicion attached to William Moar, billiardmarker, and Annie Halley, barmaid, both of whom have been discharged, and gone to Auckland. Halley is a native of New Zealand, about twenty-two years of age, medium build, auburn or reddish-coloured hair, fair complexion, blue eyes, high colour, good teeth, round features, short stature, dresses well.

Stratford. —John Murray, charged with the theft of Dr. Tom Larkin Padget’s waistcoat: This warrant has been cancelled at the request of complainant. Waistcoat not recovered.

Wanganui. —Theft of Isabella Burrell’s watch and chain. Marian Scott has been arrested by Constable De Norville, Palmerston North police, for this offence, and committed for trial. Stolen property recovered

Eketahuna. —Brian Weller, station-hand, reports stolen from a whare at Tiraumea, on the 16th or 17th ultimo, a combined pocketbook and purse, made of fawn-coloured leather, 6 in. by 2| in., with black edges, ink-spots on outside, complainant’s name written with pencil inside, containing a £lO note, supposed on the Bank of New South Wales, number unknown ; 19s. 3d. in silver, six penny stamps, and sundry receipts, one being from Hollings, solicitor, of Masterton, for £5. Suspicion attached to two swaggers, one about thirty-eight years of age, about 5 ft. 3 in. high, medium

build, dark hair, blue eyes, swarthy complexion, small dark moustache, active walk, dressed in a grey-tweed suit; gave the name of John McLaughlin when searched ; the other about sixty-six years of age, 5 ft. 9 in. high, grey hair and beard; dressed in shabby clothes. They are supposed to have gone towards Alfredton.

Wellington. —James O’Keefe, labourer, Victoria Place, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 24th ultimo, a watch (since recovered), a silver albert, long straight links connected by curb-links, and a pair of men’s machine-sewn lace-up boots, size 8, soles worn away ; value, in ail, £6. The watch was pledged at Griffith’s pawn-office, Courtenay Place, by a man who gave his name as Wilkinson. He is described as between twenty-five and thirty years of age, 5 ft. 9 in. or 10 in. high, darkish complexion, respectable appearance. His identification is doubtful.

Wellington. —Man, name unknown, charged with the theft of Maurice Thomas McGrath’s watch and albert (recovered), and coat. James Dunn, alias Wilson, has been arrested by Constable C. R. Broberg for this offence, and sentenced to two months’ labour. Coat not recovered.

Dunedin.— Archibald Anderson, alias Matherson, is charged on warrant with breaking into the dwelling of Mary Ann Buskin, boardinghouse-keeper, Maclaggan Street, on the 21st ultimo, and stealing a white-linen sheet, value 65.; since recovered. For his description, see Police Gazette, 1899, page 151. Dressed, when last seen, in a blue-serge sacsuit ; and will probably be wearing a white-straw hat with black band, or a grey-tweed skull-cap. The offence was committed in company with two others who are under remand. Offender’s arrest is important, as there are other charges against him.

Invercargill. John Sarsfield Murphy, manager, New Zealand Clothing Factory, Bluff Road, reports that between the 14th and 23rd ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : Nine table-forks, twelve dessert-forks, and twelve dessert-spoons, all solid silver ; nine table-knives and nine dessert-knives, of which no description can be given; and an iron-cased eight day clock; all quite new, wedding presents : value, £lO.
