Deserting Wives and Families, &c.

Hastings. —Arthur Stoddart is charged on warrant with being about to leave the colony without providing for the future maintenance of his illegitimate child by Agnes Shanley. Description : A native of Wellington, New Zealand, twenty-eight years of age, about sft. llin. high, slight build, fair complexion, freckled, clean-shaved except fair moustache which is inclined to be red, hair same colour; was dressed in a black double-breasted coat and vest, blueserge pants, and black hard-felt hat; stoops when walking, and generally has his hands in his trousers pockets. Wellington. —George Greenwood, charged with failing to provide for his two children, has been arrested by Constable B. O’Brien, Waverley police, and remanded to Wellington.

Christchurch. —Thomas Foss is charged on warrant with disobeying an order of Court to pay 10s. per week for the support of his daughter. Description : English, about forty years of age, a miner, sft. Gin. or 7in. high, stout build, dark eyes, fair moustache and complexion, grey hair, scar on forehead ; dressed in a light-grey tweed suit, black soft-felt hat; was accompanied by a woman who goes under the name of Mrs. Foss, about thirty years of age, sft. high, stout build, brown eyes, wore a dark cape, black hat, and fawn dress ; has a waddling gait. The sum of £8 was in arrears on the 28th ultimo. They are supposed to have left for Sydney.

Temuka. —Edward McKenzie, charged with failing to provide for the maintenance of his unborn child, has been arrested by Constable W. Willoughby, Geraldine police.

Christchurch. —Matthew Ferrick, charged with failing to support his father, has been arrested by Constable W. T. Collerton, Tenui police, and discharged by the Masterton Bench, owing to the non-arrival of the warrant. He has since been rearrested, and remanded to Christchurch.

Hampden (O amaru). Sebright Ambler, charged with deserting his wife and family, has been arrested by Constable T. O’Rourke, Otaki police, on information furnished by Chief-Detective Campbell, of Wellington. Accused was discharged, as the complaint had not been laid within six months.

Danevirke. —Frank Henry Wilson is charged on warrant with disobeying an order of Court to pay ss. a week towards the support of his illegitimate child by Mary Ellen Laws. Description : Colonial, a labourer, twenty-eight years of age, sft. 9in. or lOin. high, stout build, well proportioned, swarthy complexion, black hair, small moustache only, small dark eyes, small features, an expert runner and footballer; usually wears a light-tweed suit, and soft white or drab-felt hat; may be found working about shearing-sheds. Has been in Sydney, where he is said to have won several races, and may return there. Was recently at Waikouaiti, Otago, but cannot now be traced in that district. The sum of £ll ss. Id. was in arrears on the 24th April last.

Deserters from Her Majesty’s Service. From H.M.S. “ Rapid,” at Atickland. On 30th April, 1895. Thomas Smith, private, Royal Marine Light Infantry, a native of England, twenty-nine years of age, sft. s£in. high, dark-brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion, patch of brown over left eye, scar on left knee. A reward of £3 is offered for his arrest, in addition to £5 from the Colonial Government.

From H.M.S. “ Rapid,” at Auckland. On 21st April, 1895. Michael Walsh, ordinary seaman, nineteen years of age, sft. sin. high, dark-brown hair, brown eyes, fair complexion : A reward of £3 is offered for his arrest, in addition to £5 from the Colonial Government.
