Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Auckland. George Bowley, boarder, Waverley Hotel, Queen Street, reports stolen from his room, on the 15th ultimo, four £1 notes, bank and numbers unknown, and about Bs. in silver.

Auckland. —Joseph Newick, Park Avenue, reports stolen from him, on the 25th ultimo, whilst in a crowd at the Devonport Ferry Office, Quay Street, a brown-leather purse with brass clasp, containing two £1 notes and 2s. 4d. Purse identifiable.

Auckland. Andrew Jugin, now staying at Ah Chee’s restaurant, Queen Street, reports stolen from him, on the 18th or 19th ultimo, eleven £1 notes. Suspicion attached to Annie Dunn, in whose company he was drinking. (For her description see Police Gazette, 1891, page 184.)

Auckland. —David Mclndoe, Epsom, reports stolen from him, on the 24th ultimo, while asleep in the Pier Hotel, Albert Street, a small white-calico bag, rather old and dirty, fastened with a white running tape, containing a £1 Bank of

New Zealand note, and a cheque for £3 Os. 2d. on the same bank, dated 17th ultimo, payable to No. 468 or bearer, and signed by Samuel Hesketh and W. A. Ryan.

Auckland. —Alexander Smith, Horse-shoe, Dairy Flat, reports stolen from him, while under the influence of drink in Auckland, on the 2nd instant, a silver Waltham huntingwatch, No. 2066630, and a silver albert, curb pattern, with tassel and threepenny-piece attached.

Dargaville. —James Gamble, railway labourer, reports stolen from him cn the 26th ultimo, at the Northern Wairoa Hotel, a silver lever hunting-watch, maker supposed to be Hartman, London, number unknown, with metal chain, curb pattern, attached; value £7 ss. Identifiable.

Dargaville. —William Davison, gum-digger, reports that about 2 a.m. on the 27th ultimo he was assaulted by three men on the Hokianga Road, and robbed of a£l note. Complainant was not sober, and cannot identify the assailants.

Thames. —Stephen Bird, Campbell Street, reports stolen from his dwelling, between the 10tli and 23rd ultimo, a bellaccordion, made of light-coloured wood, ten keys, one note out of repair ; value 15s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John McAlister, a labourer, nineteen years of age, sft. 7in. high, fresh freckled complexion, black hair, brown eyes, long drooped nose. Supposed to be gum-digging in the district.

Thames. —James Sawyer, Pollen Street, reports stolen from his shop, on the 22nd ultimo, a ladies’ brown Russianleather purse, patent clasps, a ladies’ black Russian-leather handbag, common clasp, and a small round bottle of perfume ; value 14s. Gd. Identifiable.

Gisborne. Lee Fong, Gladstone Road, reports stolon from his dwelling, on the 29th ultimo, £3 in silver.

Wairoa. —James Lawton, Pokowhai, reports stolen from his tent, on the 25th ultimo, a pair of light lace-up boots, size 9, half worn (one of them has a patch at the back and a seam across instep), eleven sticks of Virginia tobacco, and a towel; value £l. Suspicion attached to a swagger, about fifty years of age, s£t. 7in. or Sin. high, grey beard (long! whiskers and moustache, medium build; dressed in whitemoleskin trousers, grey-tweed vest, and black peaked cap. Went towards Napier via Mohaka.

Manaia. —W. B. Smith reports stolen from him at the racecourse, on the 26th ultimo, a double-cased silver lever hunting-watch, number unknown, very dirty inside, gold hands, outer front case nearly off its hinge, second-hand gone; value £7; also £3 12s. in cash. This is a doubtful case.

Wellington. —Mrs. Sarah Henderson, Thompson Street, reports that between 2 and 5.30 p.m. on the 28th ultimo her bouse was broken into and the following, the property of Frederick Wilson, of Hawera, stolen: A brown-leather clasp purse, two compartments, containing six £1 notes and the return half of a second-class railway ticket, WellingtonHawera ; also a new patent ink-bottle.

Te Nui (Wellington). —William Riddle, Taueru, reports stolen from his bedroom in the Grasscndale Hotel, Upper Whareama, at about 3 a.m. on the 2nd instant, a silver Waltham hunting-watch, No. 1829032; value £4 10s. Two men, William Hogg and John Welsh, were arrested for stealing complainant’s trousers at the same time. The firstnamed offender has been sentenced to two months’ labour ; the latter was discharged, and is still in the district; but no trace of the watch can be obtained.

Christchurch. Larceny from Thomas Brook’s Shop: James Hoskins, alias Chubb, has been arrested by Chief Detective M. O’Connor for this offence, and sentenced to fourteen days’ labour.

Dunedin. —George H. Moodie, accountant, Royal Terrace, reports that his dwelling was broken into between 1.30 and 6.30 p.m. on the 24th ultimo, and the following articles, the property of Mary Kay, domestic servant, stolen : Two silver brooches, one round, “ Mary ” written on it, the other representing an anchor with three greenstones set in centre-bar ; a small inkstand and glass ball ornament; value £1 ss. Identifiable.

Lyell. —Bertilino Mercellino, Lyell Creek, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 29th ultimo, one £lO, two £5, and nineteen £1 notes, all on the National Bank of New Zealand, and a Jubilee sovereign.

Wanganui. —George Wright, labourer, Victoria Boarding House, reports stolen from his room, on the 6th instant, a pair of new tweed trousers, grey-striped with red thread running through, and a pair of elastic braces ; value £1 Bs. 6d. Trousers identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man known as Mitchell, who occupied the same room. Description: Supposed English, a bushman, twenty-two or twenty-three years of age, 6ft. 6in. or 7in. high, siigbt build, dark complexion, small dark moustache and side whiskers. He said he was going to Hawera or Stratford to cut grass-seed.

Harry Lucas and John Farmer, labourers, Kingston Place, Castle Street, report that their dwelling was broken into between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the 4th instant, and the following stolen : 10s. in silver, a white-silk handkerchief, and a bottle of scent, the property of the former; and two £1 notes and 17s. in silver, belonging to the latter.
