Charles Barrett, charged on warrant of commitment to gaol for twenty-four hours’ labour, in default of paying a fine and costs, for permitting his horse to wander, has been arrested by Detective Maurice O’Connor, Christchurch Police.

John Morland is charged on warrant of commitment to gaol for fourteen days’ labour, issued by the Wanganui Bench) under section 49 of “ The Defence Act, 1886,” in default of paying £1 10s. fine, and ss. costs, for having been absent from parade without leave while a Volunteer, and failing to keep his rifle clean, at Wanganui, on the 21st August last. Description : Supposed English, a baker and confectioner, about twenty-four years of age, oft. Tin. high, medium build, slightly round-shouldered, clean-shaved except small moustache ; when last seen wore tweed suit with conspicuous white spots. He was at one time in business in partnership with a man named Lumsden, in Victoria Avenue, Wanganui.

James Mackie is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with failing to support his four illegitimate children, at Wellington, since the sth instant. Description : Scotch, a tailor, thirty-four years of age, sft. Sin. high, medium build, fair complexion, sandy hair beard whiskers and moustache cut short; wore black sac-coat, dark vest with cloth back, grey woollen shirt, dark-red tie, and hard black-felt hat. He is supposed to have gone up country. He is well known in the Wairarapa.

Arthur Freeman, alias Fraser, absconded from the Caversham Industrial School on the evening of the 2nd instant. Description: A native of Christchurch, sixteen years and five months of age, about sft. s Jin. high, stout and well built, dark complexion, very determined look with rather cunning face, dark-brown hair; dressed in darlc-brown yellow-mixture woollen jacket, brown-moleskin trousers, dark-brown-tweod hat, and lace-up boots. He took with him an American cloth buggy-rug, with large check-pattern woollen lining. He was formerly in the Burnham Industrial School. He absconded from the Cavershain Industrial School previously, and was arrested in the neighbourhood of Timaru for housebreaking, for which offence he was sentenced, at the Supreme Court, Timaru, on the 11th December last, to twelve months’ labour under the name of William Fraser, alias Walter Freeman, but he was subsequently released and sent back to the school. He is a noted thief, and will no doubt commit some other offence.

Albert Lethaby absconded from the Burnham Industrial School on the 30th ultimo. Description: Thirteen years of age, stout build, dark complexion ; supposed dressed in grey-tw'eed jacket and moleskin trousers. He was committed to the school from Timaru or Ashburton as a neglected child. On the 30th ultimo he was allowed to accompany his mother as far as the Burnham Railway-station, but he did not return to the school, and was subsequently seen with his mother in Christchurch. His parents travel through the country repairing umbrellas, &c., and may have with them a light wagon with drab-canvas tilt, with “ Cheap Jack ” painted thereon. If the boy is found with them he is to be sent back to the school, and his mother'kept under surveillance, with a view of proceedings being taken against her for inducing him to abscond.
