IN ASHBURTON.
The Ashburton (Canterbury) police have yet another trouble to contend with in connection with the importation of liquor into the district. At the railway station a few days ago, among several cases of liquor, the constable on duty noticed one consigned to a man who, to the constable’s personal knowledge, was a teetotaller. On inquiry it was found that the man in question had not ordered the liquor or given authority for his name to be used. The liquor was taken to the police station and inquiries are being made. It is also related that a passenger on an inward bound train recently had a similar experience. When Ashburton was reached, the guard inquired of the passenger what he wanted to do with the two cases of whisky in the van. The passenger at once said he knew nothing of the cases. He went to the van, where he found the two cases bearing his name, and was proceeding to take possession when the owner arrived and claimed his goods.
