A BELIEVER IN TEMPERANCE.

At the Stawell (Victoria) Borough Council meeting the other day a communication was received from the W.C.T.U., asking permission to erect near the Commonwealth memorial a sign bearing the words, “Temperance puts wood on the fire, flour in the bin, money in the purse, clothes on the back, and vigour in the body.” Mr Edhouse, who is manager of the Stawell brewery, moved that the request be granted, and Mr Derry, of the Foresters’ Hotel, seconded the motion. An amendment was subsequently carried that the request be referred to the Works Committee for consideration. Mr Edhouse, however, declared, amidst laughter, that he would give the temperance people full liberty to post the notice on the end of the brewery.
