POLO
Much interest is being caused among devotees of nolo in the Races and Gymkhana, which are to take place at Alexandra Park, on March 21. The programme will consist of a Bending Racfe, Polo Ball Race, Polo Cup (over four furlongs), Potato Race, Hurdle Race, Ladies’ Bracelet Costume Race, Electric Race (over three furlongs), and a. Waterloo Melee. Polo ponies only are eligible, and all entries must be handed in to Mr E. Denis O’Rorke, the hon. secretary, by Wednesday, the 18th inst., at 2 p.m. There is no doubt that as the end of the season draws near the interest in the game, so far from waning,, is on the increase, and attendances have been good. Plenty of excellent practice has been indulged in by members, and some of the play shown is of a high order. The officers of the warships now in port have been trying conclusions with ‘ Aucklanders at cricket,, tennis, golf, arid nowls, so why not polo ? No doubt the fleet could put a very fair team into the field, and I am sure local players would willingly provide the ponies*. it is a popular supposition that a sailor cannot ri'de, the idea is quite a fallacy, and some of the officers are adepts in the pigskin. A match at polo against, say the Remuera Club, would prove, very popular.
