OUR ILLUSTRATIONS.
Among the illustrations to be found in this issue is a snapshot -taken on the football ground at North Shore. ’ The men from H.M.s. Archer are seen trying conclusions with those from H.M s. Lizard at the Association game. It is astonishing the keen, interest taken in the game by Jack when ashore, and if . only it were a little later in the season a great match could have been arranged between the fleet and the Auckland Clubs. The tennis lawns and bowling green at Devonport are both very picturesquely situated, and are always well attended on Saturday afternoons. A couple of pictures give a good idea of these two recreation grounds. jjs 4: ♦ • Some well-known faces will be recognis- ■ ed among the group of officials _ a.t the Egmont Meeting, while a good picture of the grandstand and lawn is also given. A' horse who distinguished himself at Egmont and Taranaki was* Black Reynard, whose portrait is shown. Madame Melba, the greatest singer of the day, who is at present in Auckland, and gives her second concert at the Opera House to-night. •* * * * Mr J. B. Atholwood, who takes the j part of Louis XI. in “ If I Were King,” and who can claim to be considered one of the best character actors that have ever visited Auckland. Miss May Chevalier, the talanted actress, who so ably takes* the part of Catherine De Vaiicelles in the play 1 If I i. Were King,” and Miss Faulkner in “ Sherlock Holmes.” and Edith Varney in “ Secret Service,” with the M’illiamson Dramatic Company, now nlaying at His Majesty’s Theatre. «■ ■* ** ■ - * . Miss Emmie Smith, who i s at piesent appearing at the City Hall, -inder Mr Dix’s management, lier pleasant smgmg and coon melodies have made her a great favourite with the City Hall patrons. A well-known local penciller dropped in for a good win over Great Scot’s victory in the Australian Cup. I hear the amount was £350, and no one will begrudge the popular metallician his windfall The pony Annoyed put up a very good performance yesterday at Alexandra Park.. The Regel mare carried 10.3 in the Suburban Pony Handicap, but the big impost was insufficient to stop her, and she won handsomely. The English Cricketers leave Wellington on Fridavj after the second Test match against Lew Zealand. Much interest will be taken in the matches in Me]bourne and Sydney to see how the visitors shape against really proved elevens. If they can hold their own against the Sydney men especially, the Britishers must be a much j more powerful team than they were given i credit for on landing. I am strongly ini dined to the opinion, however, that Trumper. Duff and Co. will prove too many for them, as they have for every team the Svdneyites- have encountered this year.
