There is quite a lull in sporting matters here after last week’s carnival. There will, however, be plenty of district meetings to be discussed at Christmas and New Year time ; also racing in the Goldfields districts at various dates up to the middle of January. . - Goodman is going in for small fiso, as he is taking up Claremount and the Winchman for the purpose of attending the up-district gatherings, instead of going to Auckland. Your gathering, however, may be well patrronised from here, as very cheap steamer fares are already advertised. The Hon. G. McLean’s colours were seen at ■our late meeting on Maremma, this being the first time they have been sported for twelve months. Tn bye gone times very few decent races started ■without them. They will be welcome again, for they help to give racing the necessary healthy tone by keeping events straight. I hear the bon. gentleman has several to bring forward, and I hope he meets with good luck. Harry Knight is getting quite a string together. Last week he took in hand a couple more, in the shape of the Musket-L’Orient gelding, Francotte, and Mountain Maid. They are both cripples, but he thinks he can get them round. At the resurrecting art he .has the credit of being an adept. Dione, the dam of Beadonwell, has missed this season, and Lady Emma, I have since learned, had twin colts, both of the youngsters dying. Skirmisher has not been seen on the track for a fortnight. ■' ’ - Paddy McGrath left here last week with the ■intention of settling somewhere up your way. Nothing will go down here but Prime Warden for your Cup. His lenient treatment has paralysed what little betting may otherwise have been done locally.
