NEW PLYMOUTH.

October 12. te.-ni. The matrons' ball was held last Wednesday in the Brougham Street Hall, and it is regarded as one of the most enjoyable fiances held in New I’iymouth for some years past. Adjoining the main door was a large and roomy marquee, furnished comfortably for sitting out, and lighted •with a pale green effect, which gave a fascinating moonlight tranfonnation on it all. 1 he hall was gorgeously decorated with huge umbrellas, lanterns, and palms. A delicious supper was served in the .supper room, the floral decorations being the purple Argentine ixias and irises, intermingled will shaded silver candlesticks. The music was rendered by Mrs Woods’ orchestra. The hostesses 'were: Mesdames Penn, Walker, Weston, Haul. Glasgow, G. Kcbbcll, Homes, John, A. Mac Diarmid. L. Nolan, Kollo, F. Robertson. L. Mrs. and Misses Lent ham, who have been visiting Auckland, have returned to New Plymouth. Miss Atkinson, who has been the guest of Miss Al. Govett, New Plymouth, has returned to Wellington. Miss Stewart, who has been visiting her sister, Airs. Claude Weston, New Plymouth, has returned to her home in Melbourne. Aliss Mabel Clarke has returned th her home at Otaliuhu, after her pleasanttrip to New Plymouth. Aliss Aloniea Govett left last week on a return trip to England. Air. T. G. Evans and Aliss B. Evans, New Plvmouth. are on visit to Auckland.
