August 11. A Social. A most enjoyable social was held In the Parish Hall, on Thursday evening in a ,i of the Curate Fund. Dancing formed the .'le.iter part of the programme ai ranged, Mrs Reid Mackay, and Miss Robertson supplying the musie. Raring the evening songs were contributed by Miss Pettit, Mrs Beaton, Miss Newc mb-llall, Miss Mackintosh, Miss Keeli,,_- and Mr Kirby charmed the audience v.'th one of his excellent recitations. The Dannevirke High School Old Boys’ As-<> iation held their annual dance in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Friday’ evening, and it was in every way a very great sir -s. The second skating carnival, organised by the proprietors of the Drill Hall {Skating Rink, was a very great success. The hall was nicely decorated and the attendance of onlookers and skaters much larger than at the previous one. Music was supplied by the Dannevirke Brass Band. Thrs liine the results of the various competitions were decided by the votes of the public. Many pretty and original costun/'s were worn. Miss McDowell, as “Princess Marie Stewart,” and Mr. Macdonald, as “Amy Bock,*’ won the prizes for the most original costumes, while Miss Bartlett and Mr. Lloyd were voted the most graceful skaters, and Miss Bartlett and Mr. Merrie, the best couple. Great fun was caused by the potato race, which was eventually won by Mr. L. Lloyd. Bridge. On Thursday evening Mrs. Lawford gave a delightful bridge party at her residence, Victoria-avenue. Twelve tables were arranged : / the drawing and dining-rooms, which were prettily de® corated with spring flowers and wattle. Mrs. D. Williams, Airs. Green, Air. Whitcombe, and Mr. I'itzliei belt were the fortunate winners of the prizes. Mrs. Lawford received her guests in a handsome black gown. Some of those present were: Air. and Airs-. Dannevirke shortly, Mr. Ardell being transferred to the llokitaxa Post Olticc. The local bowling and golf clubs will lose a most enthusiastic “sport” in Mr. Ardell, who has always been an energetic member of the clubs during his residence in Dannevirke. Another resident of Dannevirke, Air. 11. S. Cartwright, is leaving shortly for Gisborne, where he intends practising his profession. Mr. Neil Russell, who was recently admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court, spent a few days in Dannevirke last week on his way to Hamilton, where he joins a legal firm. Airs. Allen (New Plymouth) is the guest of Airs. P. T. Prichard, Victoriaavenue. Dr. Thomas Patterson, R.N., who has been on a short visit to his father, left for the South on Thursday. Air. and Airs. C. H. F. McPherson left for Hamilton on Thursday, where Mr. AlcPherson has been transferred to the Hamilton branch of the Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Aliss Al. Paton, who has been connected - with the D.C.A. for many years, leaves shortly for Wellington. Aliss Rika Jenssen has returned from Wellington, where she underwent a serious operation; her many friends will be pleased to hear of her complete recovery.
