January 7. The Races. Our much-looked-forward-to annual race meeting took place on Monday and Tuesday. All donned their gala attire, and sallied forth despite the “half gale” that was blowing. Sirs. A. W. Budge was wearing a smart white tussore silk, large leghorn hat with roses; Mrs. H. Bayley- (Wanganui) wore a pale greypaillette Empire frock with silk passementerie, large black hat; Mrs. C. Bayley was in grey corded silk robe, hat en suite; Mrs. Glasgow, dark blue striped coat and skirt, large burnt straw hat with mirror velvet trimmings; Mrs. G. Harrison (Eltham) looked well in a Russian coat and skirt in mauve Libertycloth, large black silk hat, white feather boa; Miss Harrison, smart rose-coloured linen, black silk hat, with roses to match; Mrs. Paul, handsome grey eolienne costume; Mrs. Stubbs, brown and blue cloth'eoat and skirt, eaxe blue toque, black silk stole; Mrs. Craw-jiaw, pale pink linen coat and skirt, black toque; Mrs. W. Penn (New Plymouth), heliotrope costume, bat to match; Miss Kirkby. Mrs. Rennel, Mrs. Glynes; Aire. Raikes, saxe blue linen coat and skirt, large straw hat; Mrs. Carbery, black' poplin coat and skirt, black hat; Mrs. Vniacke, eau de nil linen coat and skirt, black silk facings, black silk scarf, verylarge straw hat trimmed with roses and black silk; Mrs. Porritt, white embroidered muslin, black hat; Mrs. Paget, white lace robe, very large white hat, with black feathers; Mrs. L. Paget, shepherd’s plaid costume, large burnt straw hat; Mrs. Frank Mackay, becoming dark grey- coat and skirt; toque to match; Alisses Glenn (Hawera), Miss Nolan (Hawera); Airs. Menzies, blue linen coat and skirt, blue hat with pink roses; Airs. E. G. Robinson; Mrs. Webster, white embroidered muslin, prettygrey hat with feathers; Airs. W. Anderson, Mrs. Wilkie; Airs. Thompson (Invercargill), grey voile; Aliss Kirkwood; Airs. H. Kirkwood, terra-cotta linep coat and skirt, large black hat; Airs. W. Young, vieux rose coat and skirt, handsome white feather stole, large vieux rose hat to match; Airs. Richards, brown coat and skirt, chip hat; Aliss Gladys James; Airs. Copping, grey coat and skirt, black hat; Airs. Tyrer; Mrs. Hogg (Alidhirst), blue cloth Princess robe, with black braiding, blue hat to match, white silk lace scarf; Aliss Skaglund, white cloth costume; Aliss Abbott, pale blue silk costume, dark blue hat; Airs. Stohr, grey costume, large hat with roses; Airs. J. D. ATalone, dark green linen coat and skirt, black hat; Aliss Alalone, purple costume; Aliss West; Aliss A'oung (Inglewood), grey costume, large Panama hat; All's. Welch, etc. The lawn was very crowded, and the band from Palea played many pleasing Hems. Juvenile Parties. Mrs. Topping gave a jolly- children’* party on Friday. Th* competition for
th • best brown paper elephant (which caused great merriment) was won by Aliss Eileen Marvie; second prize, Sybil Clarke; and the most comical, Miss Geraldine Vniacke.
Mrs. Stubbs gave a juvenile party on Wednesday. The guessing competition was won by Aliss Sybil Clarke first, and Miss Marjory Kimbell (Hawera) second. Personal.
Air. Cook (Tauranga) spent the New Year holiday* with Air. and Mrs. Budge. Air. Black (Tailiape) paid a short visit to his people here during the holidays. Mr. Aldsworth was the guest of Air. Budge for the races. Air. Baker has been on a visit to Air. Heatly. Mr. H. Valentine, just returned from South Africa, is visiting his sister, ‘Mrs. G. Harrison (Eltham). Mrs. Harry Bayley spent a few day* with her mother, Airs. Rennel.
