NAPIER.

July 29. Wintry Weather. During the last week Napier has been visited by an unusually cold snap. The Rnnhincs have looked magnificent, so

thickly covered with enow, and now that wet July is over, we are hoping for a lovely August. Many winter have arrived, and “Sunny Napier” must Jive up to its high reputation as a wine ter resort. The Jubilee Singers. A large audience attended the Theatre! Royal on Wednesday evening to hear the Fisk Jubilee Singers. A number of Maoris were present, and thoroughly appreciated the minstrels. The solos were well rendered, but the choruses were the feature of the evening. Old favourites such as “Hear dem Bells”

and “Steal Away” never lose theit charm.

Gymnastic Display and Concert. A most successful entertainment was given by the lady members of St. Paul's Recreation Club in the Schoolroom on Thursday night. Various exercises with clubs, dumbbells, and skipping canes were given, interspersed with songs and recitations, which were greatly enjoyed by a large audience. Mr. Bell, in the absence of Mr. R. 1). D. McLean, president of the club, took the chair. He said that the club had now been supported for fifteen years and was doing splendid work in Napier. Personal. Miss Whittaker, acting-secretary for the G.F.S. in England, is staying with Mrs. Averil, Bishopscourt. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh White are visiting Napier. Mrs. Arthur Sims (Christchurch) left by express on Thursday for Australia. Mr and Mrs Broderick and Miss Broderick left for Christchurch on Friday. During their short stay in Napier, they have made many friends.
