June 24. Progressive Euchre. 'Mrs. W. Coombs was the hostess at a progressive euchre party, given at her residence, Feathereton-street, on last Saturday night. Bright fires everywhere gave a cosy effect, and made one forget the bitter raw cold outside. A profusion of beautiful pot plants gave a tropical appearance to the vestibule and spacious halls, and the large draw-ing-room, which was used as the cardroom, was gay with spring flowers, also the eupper table in the dining-room. There were 12 tables. Miss Hilda Bell and Mr. Armstrong were the first prizewinners. For the booby honours, there were five or six aspirants, Aliss Margaret Waldegrave and Mr. Scott eventually winning. Airs. Coombs wore a soft black satin toilette, the bodice finished with jet trimming; Mies Al. Coombs, blue chiffon taffeta, with cream net tucked yoke and gold embroidery; Aliss Alice Coombs, a pretty frock of white muslin and lace; Mrs. j. P. Innes, cream satin, with touches of turquoise blue velvet, pale blue chiffon, scarf worn or shoulders; Mrs. G. W. Harden, black crepe de chine with chiffon vest and embroideries in dainty shades; Airs. R. AL McKnight, black satin with 'black sequined net trimming, yoke of cream chiffon; Mrs. Fuller, green charmeuse toilette; Miss Bright (Gisborne), cream silk and' chiffon, cluster of salmon pink roses on bodice; Miss Randolph, lavender crepe de chine, bodice and skirt draped with silver beaded white net, finished with a silver fringe; Miss F. Randolph, rose-coloured charmeuse, with cream lace and touch of pale green on coreage, silver sequined black chiffon scarf worn on shoulders; Miss Alargaret Waldegrave, a soft cream satin frock with cream chiffon tucker; Mis?. Dorothy Waldegrave, white muslin and lace, with touches of pale blue on bodice; Airs. Tripe, cream chiffon taffeta with large single pink rose on corsage; Miss Bell, white muslin and lace with touches of black; Miss Gwen Bell, white muslin and lace, single pink rose in hair and pale blue chiffon scarf on shoulders; Airs. Dairy Show. The National Dairy Show opened on Tuesday and closes to-night. Throughout the four days the weather has been glorious. On Wednesday the football matches between the Wanganui and Te Aute colleges attracted a great crowd. Th? junior match was played first and prove I a decided victory for Te Aute by 12 points to nil. In the senior match the play was often very brilliant, and ended in favour of Wanganui by 14 points to 9. Frantic* excitement was caused o.i several occasions, and Hives, the particular star of the Wanganui team, was carried oil' the field shoulder high by a party of delighted “old Imys’ ” spectators.
