March 1. Ladies' Day. <■- The game of bowls, as played by the fair sex. was seen on the green on Thursday, when the members, mindful of many afternoon-teas provided, resolved to make some return by holding a ladies’ day, on which the ladies were to do nothing but play bowls, consume afternoon-tea, and promenade. A very successful exhibition was the result, and all present were so highly delighted that the members intend to give another ladies’ day shortly. ! At the close of the proceedings the ladies, grouped together in and around the pavilion, gave enthusiastic cheers for the members, which were as enthusiastically " returned. J. Smith, grey tweed coat and skirt; Mrs! Allen, black voile, and black bonnet with pink flowers; Mrs. Rutherfurd (Wairere), tailormade coat and skirt, hat trimmed with Russian violets: Mrs. D. Rutherford (Hockridge, Masterton), tailor-made coat and skirt, hat to match: Mrs. Lacuna, white cambric frock, white hat; Mrs. Redman, white linen gown and large hat; Mrs., Lloyd, black; Mrs. C. Peek, white frock and.white hat; Mrs. Rarnsdale, brown Shantung; Mrs. Harwood, pa,le blue costume; Mrs. Philpotts, black broehe; Mrs. C. Philpotts, blue Empire dress,, and blue silk hat trimmed with large gold flowers; Mrs. E. Some of those present were: —Mesdames Chambers, Maitland, Nicol, Riddell, Allen, Seymour, Philpotts, etc.; and Misses Philpotts (2), Lloyd, Dawkins, Speed, Greensill, ete. There was quite an exodus of volunteers and cadets from Marlborough to Wellington during the visit of England’s greatest soldier—Kitchener of Khartoum. Owing to the weather and other circumstances, many were disappointed, and did not even see the mighty soldier, when a smile would have assuaged the pangs of hunger and a word of appreciation would have made every little man feel half a head taller.
