NEW PLYMOUTH.

Dear Bee, March 14., A A ERY SUCCESSFUL ENTERTAINMENT was held in St. Mary’s Hall last Thursday evening, in aid of the Maori Girls’ College, Auckland. A concert occupied the first part of the evening. Perry's orchestra opened with the overture from “ Faust,” and later on played “ Les Cloches de Corneville,” with great success. Vocal items were rendered by Miss O. Kelly, Messrs. E. Clarke, Archer and Haslem, and Miss Warren’s pianoforte solo, and Mrs. Haslam’s recitation were encored. In the second half of the programme an excellent farce, “ The [Strange Adventures of Mr. Hummingtop,” was produced,' the principal actors being Mr. Hummingtop and Mr. Gillebrand, and these characters were taken by Mr. F. J. Easthet, and Mts. Fred Watson. Their acting of the piece was distinctly above the average of amateur performers. These two Were well backed up by Mrs. Harry Ward (Rosa Columbier), the circus girl, who portrayed her Character with great vivacity. Mis's Dora Bedford (Daisy Maitland), Hummingtop’s American niece, lived her character for the time, while Mr, Horrobin (Ralph ((finerod),, Hupmiingtqp’s friend, anil Mr. C. V. Burniiig'ton (the uririiitiggted fop, and Miss, Oliyp ~King (Gaprgie liiiuimingtop) noted their 'parts naturally rind with great spirit. Miss Brewster (Barbara) made a charming maid, while Mr. Bert Griffiths’s (butler), acting was not spoilt

by the usual exaggeration. Amongst the very crowded audience I noticed Mrs. Addenbrook, in black and white inustin, cream silk vest, with kimono shoulder straps of black lace insertion. Avery, cream tucked voile with cream laee vest and berthe relieved with black velvet ribboned sash; Mrs. Bewley, cream silk taffetas blouse, black silk skirt; Miss G. Bewley, white muslin, inset with laee; Mrs. Leatham, pretty black and white silk muslin, trimmed with bands cut on the cross, bodice relieved with pipings of pale blue; Miss Leatham, cream silk and lace blouse, dark skirt; Misses E. and K. Leatham; Misses Hanna; Mrs. Kelly, black; Miss Fenton, gi'ey floral muslin, with Valenciennes lace on frills; Mrs. Rollo, scarlet silk blouse, inset with cream lace, threaded with red velvet bebe ribbon, blaek skirt; Miss Dorothy Simpson, pretty white embroidered muslin, pale blue ribbon bows in hair; Mrs. H. Davy, cream voile; Mrs. Oswin; Miss O. Mackay, pale blue floral muslin; Miss S. McKellar, New Plymouth. < Mrs. Fred. Webster, New Plymouth, is visiting her married daughter, Mrs. Farley, of Tiinaru. Miss Ivy Birdling, of Waitara, New Plymouth, has gone for a three months’ trip to Christchurch. Dr. and Mrs. Wohlmann, of Rotorua, are on a short visit to New Plymouth. Master Hugh Fraser, Nelson College, who has been home for the last week or two on account of an outbreak of sickness, has now returned to his studies. Mrs. G. Kebbell; who has been on a visit to Plirinnerton, has now returned to New Plymouth.
