TENNIS
At the West End Lawn on Saturday the final matches for Kohn’s Gold Medal Handicap Singles were played off. Considerable interest was taken in the final round when Mr A. H. Brabant met Mr John Peacock, and a great game resulted. The superior form of Brabant, however, allowed him to secure the advantage, thereby winning the gold medal. Mr Brabant has been exceptionally fortunate, as in addition to the medal won last Saturday, he has also secured the President’s gold medal
for the Championship Singles, and a trophy for Gentlemen's Handicap Doubles, which he won in conjunction with Mr John Peacock. Most of our tennis lawns are closed. Parnell is now being dug over and resodded, while the Eden and Epsom, which received a very heavy top-dressing about a month ago, is looking quite green again. There are six tennis courts now, an increased area having been added, allowing a distance of nine feet between each court, aud the old net posts have been replaced with new iron ones embedded in concrete. The club having made arrangements with Mr Turner for a supply of water for the lawns next season, water mains have been laid with that object in view. The committee have through the generosity of Mr Udy been enabled to form a croquet ground sufficient for two sets, as last season croquet was such a success. The Auckland tennis lawns and Grafton croquet lawns have not been closed yet, and I noticed last Saturday how full the lawns were with enthusiastic players of both croquet aud tennis. I saw by advertisement that on May Ist the Winter Tennis Club would be opened on the Asphalt Courts, Zealandia Riuk, Stanley-street, but as I did not see anyone there as I passed, I expect that Club has fallen through.
