CROQUET.
The game of croquet has of late years experienced a revival, and is again becoming quite a favourite with Auckland ladies, especially with those of them who find tennis entail too much exertion and fatigue. Three years ago the Auckland Croquet Club—Grafton Road—was formed, and is now bringing its present season to a successful ending. The lawn this year has been specially well attended, and the play shows a marked improvement. For the first two years of the Club’s existence Mrs Toni Reid, the present honorary secretary, won the championship trophy, and this year Mrs Sowerby has secured it. Trophies were also presented for competition this year by Mrs W. Coleman, Vice-president of the Club, and by Mrs Ehrenfried. Mrs (Dr.) King gave a donation towards the Champion trophy. During the year the Club played byinvitation on the Remuera and Mount Eden Croquet Clubs' lawns, and the members of these Clubs returned the visit, the interclub visits proving very acceptable and enjoyable. The final game for the Championship was played by Miss Coleman and Mrs Sowerby, and proved a closely-contested interesting match, Mrs Sowerby winning, as already noted, after a hard contest. For Mrs Coleman’s trophy the final was played by Mrs (Dr.) King and Mrs Sowerby, the latter winning by half a point. The final for Mrs Ehreufried’s trophy was played on Thursday last by Miss Coleman and Mrs J. A Haslett, and was won by the latter.
