NAPIER.

Dear Bee, October 11. Mr Sydney Hoben’s CONGEKT was a very great success, and I was very glad to see a crowded house. Indeed, there was a most fashionable audience, all our nicest people being present, and several of the leading Hastings folk. I think a number of people went to hear Miss Holroyd sing, her reputation having preceded her. Miss Holroyd is stopping for a short time with Mrs Fitzroy at Hastings, and as she* happened to be in Hawke’s Hay at the time Mr Hoben gave his concert, she kindly consented to help. She sang very nicely, and has a w’ellt rained voice. The Misses Fitzroy played very correctly and well for such young performers; they were encored Miss Farley Blake was heard to great advantage, as was also Miss Jacomb. We were rather disappointed at not hearing Mr Hoben play, but I believe his arms are again troubling him slightly, so he is wise to take every care. Miss Carrie Watson performed splendidly. Her playing reflects great credit on Mr Hoben as her teacher. She is a most promising pupil. Miss Giblin, too, of Havelock, played in really tirst-rate style for such a young performer. OUR PEOPLE. Mrs Balfour (Bank New Zealand) is stopping for a short time with Mrs William Balfour at Mohaka. Mr Balfour is in Auckland but is expected back shortly. Mr Kettle has gone to Christchurch. Before leaving he was suffering from a severe coid—a sort of influenza attack, I believe, which tiresome epidemic is again going about amongst us. Miss Wardrop s cooking classes have been very well attended on the whole, considering the counter attractions which have been going on in Napier at this time of the year. Miss Taylor has been helping Miss Wardrop while she has been giving her lectures. A number of Hastings and Tomoana people have attended the lectures. Gladys.
