From Auckland: Auckland to Hamilton 81 miles Hamilton to Rotorua 69 „ Rotorua to Taupo .. 56 „ Taupo to Park 40 „ The present state of the roads are as follows— Auckland—Hamilton: Metalled all the way, except for a few miles over the Rangiriri Hills. Hamilton—Rotorua : Metalled all the way except for the portion through the Mamaku Bush. An alternative route through Atiamuri is available, the road surface at present being good, though steep in parts. Rotorua—: This is a clay and pumice road, with quite a good surface during fine weather, but treacherous after rain.
Taupo—National Park: The road surface is good, but with very steep grades at times. Also there are several fords to be negotiated, but follow the most recent tracks made by other cars, and all will be well. The road across to Waiouru is not to be recommended for motors, but is possible to the experienced motorist. Once at the Park, the tourist should use the Government map as a guide.
'J'HIS tour is strongly to be recommended to the Wellington motorist, as the roads as far as Waiouru are excellent, it being quite possible to cover the whole distance in one day. From Waiouru the road across the Park is not to be recommended for motors, and it is advisable to make all sightseeing trips on foot. There is an accommodation house at Waiouru, but a camping outfit is to be preferred on this tour. The map of the National Park obtainable from the Government Survey Department is very necessary as a guide; in fact, it is not wise for the stranger to attempt a sightseeing trip without this map.
