Stolen, from the bunks of Messrs. Owen and Warrington, passengers on board the ship Merope , four Crimean shirts, black and white checks; one flannel shirt; two pairs cotton socks ; two silk pocket handkerchiefs, blue; the property of David Owen. One Walker’s Pocket Dictionary; one book on arithmetic ; one book on the Pursuit of Knowledge ; the property of George Warrington.
Stolen, from William Brough, at the Pier Hotel, Kaiapoi, about 2.30 p.m., on August 12, an old brown leather purse, steel mountings, opens with a spring. Contents : Four £1 notes, and sixteen shillings in silver ; numbers of notes unknown. Frank Hawley is suspected, was searched, but none of the missing property was found on him.
Stolen, from the deck of the barque Elm Grove, at Lyttelton, a brass binnacle with two lamps, maker’s name J. A. Feather, Dundee.
Stolen, from Mr. Johns, six-mile peg, Great North Road, on the night of June 14, a bay mare, black points, 5 years old, branded Xbn near shoulder, about 14 hands; had a cover on at the time.
Stolen, from Frederick Nelson, at Barton’s stables, Timaru, on the afternoon of August 16, a black leather purse, somewhat worn, elastic band, loose at one end, about 4 inches long and 3 inches wide, with memo, book and pencil in it, containing five £1 notes, Bank of New Zealand, two new ones, numbers unknown; six shillings or six shillings and sixpence in silver, consisting of two halfcrowns, and one shilling and sixpence in silver; two bills from Brown and Plante, both for £1 odd, and receipted; a dog collar receipt issued at Arowhenua, for brown retriever bitch, No. 3281, to F. Nelson.
Stolen, from the shop of Mr. Thomas Lewis, Springfield Road, a . double-barrelled gun, No. 10 bore, Damascus barrels, maker’s name J. D. Dougal, Glasgow. The gun was taken out of the rack between 5 p.m. June 1 and 9 a.m. June 3, 1872,
Stolen, from the Old Wharf, Ferry Road, a large sized iron chain about 50 feet long, with large hook attached, the property of Mr. Horler, Gloucester Street, Christchurch. This is suspected to have been taken away by the ketch Elizabeth, which left the river that night bound for Okain’s Bay. Police Gazette. —Vol. X., Ao. 9,
Stolen, from the Saltwater Creek Bridge, now in course of construction near Timaru, bteween the hours of 5 p.m. August 24, and 8 a.m. August 26,1872, twenty cold chisels, one H inch wide; about ten punches, octagon shape; one hand hammer,-cast steel, 61bs. weight; all marked with letter A, value ■ about £3, identifiable; the property of Mr. John Andrews, contractor.iHifiri
