Galatea, at Murupara, 26,209 acres. Acquired : 25,112 acres 1931 and 1,097 acres 1950. Objective: Fifteen civilians and forty-two ex-servicemen established on 8,290 acres. Five dairy-farms allotted on wages July, 1949, and twelve dairy units for allotment on wages July, 1950. Subdivision of remaining area, 15,285 acres, not yet finally schemed. Development Programme : Clearing, cultivation, grassing, establishment of lucerne, fencing, buildings, and water-supplies. Progress : Development of twelve dairy-farms completed except for buildings and minor subdivisional fencing. A contract has been let for nineteen sets of farm buildings, and these will be started in April. Clearing and grassing remainder of the block is progressing well and it is expected that development will be completed in three years. Five ex-servicemen employed on wages with promises of dairy sections. Hamurana, at Rotorua, 275 acres. Acquired : 252 acres in 1947 and 23 acres in 1948. Objective: Two dairy-farms for allotment July, 1949. Development Programme : Subdivision, establishment of lucerne, buildings, water-supply, electric power. Progress : Completed. Sections balloted—two successful ex-servicemen not yet taken possession on permanent tenure. Kaituna, at Paengaroa, 763 acres. Acquired: February, 1949. Objective : Two dairy units for allotment July, 1950, and two mixed farms for allotment July, 1951. Development Programme : On dairy units—renovating 150 acres existing grass, 145 chains of fencing, and two sets of farm buildings. Development programme for mixed sections not determined. Progress : Development of dairy sections completed except for houses, which are being erected; 265 acres cleared and sown in permanent pasture on balance of area. One farm-manager employed with promise of a section and two ex-servicemen on wages with promises of sections. Mamahu, at Rotorua, 378 acres. Acquired, September, 1949. Objective: Utilization and subdivision not yet finally schemed. Development Programme : This area was handed over for development by the Department of Agriculture, which had used it as an experimental farm. It is being held as a base for future development operations in the Mamaku district and will probably be subdivided jointly with future acquisitions in that district. Maraetai, at Mangakino, 5,900 acres. Acquired: Crown land. Objective : Eight dairy-farms (1,210 acres) for settlement July, 1950. Subdivision of remaining area not yet finally schemed. Development Programme : This is part of a large area of Crown land which is being developed from the rough. It is expected that it will provide an average of ten sections each year for ex-servicemen settlement. Progress : Development of eight dairy-farms completed except for houses, which are being erected. In addition, 3,200 acres sown in permanent grass and fenced to allow consolidation. Eight ex-servicemen ballotees occupying temporary accommodation and working on wages with : promises of sections. Martins, at Reporoa, 142 acres. Acquired: February, 1950. Objective : One dairy unit for immediate allotment. Development Programme : Implement-shed, piggery, repairs to cow-shed, fencing repairs, water-supply, renovations to pasture. Progress : Nil. Matanuku, at Tokoroa, 3,452 acres. Acquired : 2,957 acres in 1940, 334 acres in 1945, and 161 acres in 1946. Objective : Twenty-two dairy sections and one sheep-farm for allotment up to July, 1949, one dairy section for allotment July, 1950, and 40 acres for allotment to disabled ex-servicemen'. Development and Progress : Development completed on 23 sections allotted. One dwelling and one implement-shed to be erected on the final dairy section. Temporary accommodation will be provided if this section is balloted this year. The remaining 40 acres is being transferred to the Department of Maori Affairs for the settlement of a disabled Maori ex-serviceman. Ex-serviceman share-milker employed on the dairy section without promise of a section. Mihi, at Reporoa, 25,307 acres. Acquired : 7,023 acres in 1938, 1,701 acres in 1939, 13,715 acres in 1940, 2,261 acres in 1945, 512 acres in 1947, and 95 acres in 1950. Objective : Twelve dairy-farms for allotment July, 1951. Subdivision of remaining area not yet finally schemed. Development Programme : The necessity for a comprehensive investigation into the provision of water-supplies on this block has retarded the planning of subdivision schemes. The sections envisaged for settlement in 1951 are those on which the water position is satisfactory. Tests made now indicate that individual water-supplies are possible in most areas, and it is hoped that the provision of an extensive and costly community water-supply scheme will not be necessary. Progress : Development has, in the main, been confined to clearing, cultivating, and sowing large areas of virgin country. Approximately 9,865 acres have been sown in permanent pasture and fenced to allow adequate stocking. Five trial bores have been drilled for water-supplies. Special attention has been given to the pastures set down for settlement next year. Tenders have been called for the required farm buildings. Murupara, at Murupara, 180 acres. Acquired : July, 1933. Objective : This block is the remaining portion of the old-established Murupara Small Farm Scheme, and final disposal of balance of 134 acres has not yet been decided, as it may be be required in connection with New Zealand Forest Service proposals in this district. 46 acres alienated July, 1948. Progress : The grassed area is let on temporary tenancy to neighbouring farmers for grazing. Ngahere, at Tauranga, 4,889 acres. Acquired: October, 1949. Objective: Utilization and subdivision not yet finally schemed. Development Programme : Long-term development project. Area mostly in timber. Development programme not yet approved. Property being held until more easily developed country has been utilized. Progress : Nil.
