I.—B.

REPORTS.

No. 244, 1934.—Petition of W. A. Brown, or Dorset Avenue, New Plymouth, and 531 Others, and 43 Petitions of a Similar Nature, as per Schedule attached. Praying that legislation be enacted providing for the enrolment of children at public schools on attaining the age of five years. I have the honour to report that, in view of the strong case made by the petitioners and of the fact that the five-year-old children were excluded as an economy measure, having regard to the improved condition of the country's finances, this Committee is of the opinion that the readmission of the five-year-old children to the schools should receive the most favourable consideration when the whole system of education comes up for review next year. 25th October, 1935.

Schedule.

No. 146.—Petition of E. Goodall, of Dunedin. Praying for financial relief and the setting-up of a Commission to inquire into the circumstances surrounding the termination of his daughters' engagement with the Dunedin Training College. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. H. Atmore, for Chairman. 25th October, 1935.

Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Education Committee desires to record its appreciation of the care, ability, and tact with which the Chairman, Mr. Bodkin, has conducted the business of the Committee throughout the session; and it also desires that this resolution shall be recorded on the the minutes of the Committee and be reported to the House. S. G. Smith, a Member of the Committee. 25th October, 1935.
