TE KAHA DEVELOPMENT SCHEME.—WHANGAPARAOA SECTION. (See Plan 30, G.-10.) Repobt on Wokk done to 31st Makch, 1933. Contracts. Unemployment contracts for work estimated to cost £2,338 17s. and providing for the employment of 183 men were approved, and subsidies amounted to £913 2s. 3d. were allotted. Tlie position at the 31st March, 1933, as shown by the schedule of contracts hereto is that a total sum of £1,934 19s. was expended, and the total amount of subsidies paid or payable was £675 Bs. lid. Contracts outstanding amounted to £411 135., and subject to subsidies totalling £237 13s. 4d. The total number of men employed on the various contracts was 205 —actual individuals 55. Work. Work commenced on this section of the scheme early in January, 1932. It was subdivided into two subsections, namely : — (a) Whangaparaoa Proper, comprising Whangaparaoa 1a (part) and Ib, and the Crown sections. (b) Whangaparaoa Units—namely, Hirina Waititi, Kuaha Waititi, and Honana Maioha. ior the purpose of this report the work on the two sections will be shown separately. Scrub-cutting.—{a) Whangaparaoa Proper: 519 acres, cost £432 Is. Number of men employed, 49. This work was done on the tableland, 231 acres ; flats along the Whangaparaoa River, 188 acres ; and the extension of the tableland area east to the river and south-west to the boundary of Whangaparaoa la, 100 acres. (b) Units : 246J acres, cost £176 10s. Number of men employed, 12. The location of the workis set out on the summary hereto. Roading. (a) Whangaparaoa Proper: (1) 18 chains, cost £12; employed 3 men to provide temporary access to the tableland. (2) Clearing slips from Potaka to McLernon's homestead on the Main East Coast Highway. (6) Units : 180 chains, cost £150. Number of men employed 32. Formation and cutting back corners and widening road from Oruaiti Beach to Whangaparaoa Beach, including beach access Stumping, <fec.—Whangaparaoa Proper : 195 acres, cost £179 ss. Number of men employed, 19 Stumping 61 acres of scrubbed area on tableland in preparation for the plough and digging wiwi and toetoe and stumps on the flats, 97 acres—area to be ploughed; digging wiwi and toetoe, and generally cleaning up and top-dressing paddocks Nos. 3, 4, and 6, 37 acres. Ploughing, Discing, and Harrowing.—Whangaparaoa Proper : 86 acres, cost £101 ss. Number of men employed, 3. Tableland (61 acres) above stumped, and 25 acres on Flat No. 1 (holding paddock), being part of 97 acres, cleaned of wiwi, &c. Units: 140J acres, cost £161 lis. 6d. Number of men employed, 4 (as set out in summary hereto). J Sowing and Manuring—Whangaparaoa Proper: 306 acres, cost £30 13s. Number of men employed, 16. Tableland : 120 acres burn ; 25 acres scattered burns and bare patches; 25 acres old grass and sidelings top-dressed ; 61 acres ploughed area. Flats : 25 acres ploughed area and 67 acres scattered burns on Flats Nos. 1 and 2, and 8 acres old grass top-dressed. Total, 273 acres grassed and manured and 33 acres top-dressed. Units : 170| acres, cost £14 Is. Number of men employed, 6. Honana Maioha (54 acres) and Kuaha Waititi (86J acres) being scrubbed and ploughed, and Hirina Waititi (30 acres), being part of area of 60 acres, scrubbed. Draining. Whangaparaoa Proper : 160 chains, cost £69. Number of men employed, 6. Units : 60 chains, cost £37 10s. Number of men employed, 3 (as set out in summary hereto) Fencing. Whangaparaoa Proper: New erection—2o7 chains on tableland external boundary fence and fence round ploughed area; 77 chains on flat. Repairing 47 chains of tableland external fence, 40 chains on No. 3 Flat, 222f chains along road from landing-shed to rivercrossmg. Clearing 190 chains of tableland lines. Stripping fences and digging up posts and coiling wires, 538 chains of back-line fences on Whangaparaoa Ib. Stripping yielded 1,400 posts, 2-]- tons plain wire, and \ ton barb-wire. Total cost of above work, £209 18s., and men employed numbered 25. Units : Kuaha Waititi (140 chains), being external boundary of 86J acres, sown. Honana Maioha, 80 chains to close his area of 54 acres sown. Total cost of this work £55, and number of men employed 3. Splitting and Delivery—Whangaparaoa Proper : 1,700 battens, cost £15 14s. 6d. Number of men employed, 2. 1,400 were dug up from the fences on back lines and packed out at a cost of £29 Bs. lhe packing was not included in a contract. A further 16,000 battens were supplied from Potaka at a cost of 17s. per 100 delivered on Whangaparaoa Scheme, the unemployment subsidy received being £40—i.e., ss. per 100. Unl t s : 2 > ooo posts, 8,000 battens, and 100 strainers were split on Honana Maioha's section and delivered to the roadside at a total cost of £200, and the number of men employed was 3. Pastures— Whangaparaoa Proper: These are sufficiently established to warrant subdividing for dairying, and it is proposed to start three herds this season on a total area of 275 acres grass to carry 90 heifers. The balance of 68 acres good pasture and about 80 acres of rough pasture on No. 2 Flat will carry the weaner heifers for next year. Units : Two new sheds will be started this season on—(1) Kuaha Waititi (861 acres grassed) 30 heifers ; and (2) Honana Maioha (54 acres grassed), 20 heifers. Other Work— Whangaparaoa Proper: Pulling down old wool-shed and blacksmith shop and dismantling yards. The timber has been cut up, and, with the good iron, is to be used for cow-sheds Buildings. Whangaparaoa Proper : These comprise the landing-shed purchased for £30 and now used as a store-shed for materials and supplies other than grass-seed ; gram-store (iron building) now grass-seed depot; store and post-oflice, stables, and cottage. With the exception of the storeshed, the remaining buildings were purchased or transferred from the Crown.
