TE KAHA DEVELOPMENT SCHEME.—ORETE SECTION. (See Plan 30, G.-10.) Report on Work done to 31st March, 1933. This Scheme is divided into two subsections—namely, (1) Orete Units for dairying, and (2) Orete No. 2 for sheep and cattle raising. w Contracts.—Contracts for work estimated to cost £680 12s. and providing employment for 23 men were submitted and approved, and subsidies amounting to £282 lis. were allotted. At 31st March 1933, the total sum of £420 13s. 6d. was paid for work done, and subsidies amounting to £125 16s. were paid or payable. The number of men actually employed was 38—individuals 12. Contract outstanding (Orete No. 2 only) amounted to £259 18s. 6d., subject to subsidies totalling £156 15s. Work.—Orete Units : This is set out, in the contracts schedule and summary hereto, and comprises t e clearing of 30 acres of scrub and the ploughing, discing, harrowing, and sowing of 328 acres, at a total cost of £350 10s. In addition, 108 acres were ploughed and sown and 60 chains (estimated) of fencing erected at no cost for labour. The total area pastured by the Scheme is 466 acres Milking will commence this coming season upon 366 acres of the above, and 129 springing heifers have been allotted to five units, four of whom will be new suppliers. The amount of hay harvested from the above area was 9 tons. No local administration costs were incurred , Moana Waititi gave his services as foreman free. Orete No 2 , : .P"; work ° n this block was confined to making the fences sheep and cattle proof, and at the end of the financial year £70 3s. 6d. had been spent on the work as set out in the summary hereto It might be mentioned here that the work did not commence till January of this year. A committee of management was appointed by the owners to supervise the work, and a shepherdmanager to 100 after the stock. 1
