Herewith are reports from the Supervisor for the Bay of Plenty Group of the Waiariki District Native Land Development Schemes (Mr. R. Royal) covering the development work carried out on the various schemes within the group during the year ended 31st March, 1933. R. N. Jones, Under-Secretary.
REPORTS.
RUATOKI DEVELOPMENT SCHEME. (See Plan 27, G.-10.) Repokt on Work done to 31st Maech, 1933. Contracts. —Unemployment contracts for work estimated to cost £3,163 10s., and providing employment for 285 men, were approved, and subsidies amounting to £1,430 3s. 6d. were allotted. The position at the 31st March, 1933, as set out in the schedule of contracts hereto shows that the total sum of £2,427 Bs. 9d. was paid out for work done, and the total amount of subsidies paid or payable was £795 7s. 3d. Contracts outstanding amounted to £695, and subject to subsidies totalling £625. The total number of men employed was 259, but the same names appearing in two or three contracts reduced the total to 127 individuals. WorJc.—^Work for which payment was made is set out on schedule of contracts hereto and summarized together with the work for which no labour-costs were incurred. This report deals with the total amount of work done within the Scheme as a whole, the work done on the various subdivisions being set out in the summary hereto. Scrub-cutting.—Work under this heading total 1,119 acres 3 roods 9 perches, of which work on 847 acres was paid for, and the ba.lance of 272 acres 3 roods 9 perches, mostly on the Ngahina Section of C Scheme, was done without any charge on the development funds. This is entirely in C Scheme area. Cultivation. —A total area of 2,446 acres and 21 perches was ploughed, disced, harrowed, sown, and manured. The only labour-cost incurred was in the scrub-cutting and cultivation of 847 acres of C Scheme. The expenditure under the above two headings totalled £727 ss. 9d., and a total of fifty-three men were employed. Contracts outstanding for this class of work are for 200 acres scrub-cutting, ploughing, &c., and 64 acres of stumping. Estimated cost, £195.
