No. I.—Petition of Alice Jane Anderson, of Christchurch. Praying for compensation for- services rendered by her late husband in the Education Department. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 7th December, 1921.

No. 161. —Petition of Maria Douds, of Dunsandel. Praying for recognition of claim to enable her to become an original contributor to the Teachers' Superannuation Fund. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 7th December, 1921.

No. 254.—Petition of William Stirling, of Blackball. Praying that his back service be recognized for superannuation purposes, subject to his paying arrears due from the inauguration of the scheme of 1906 until he rejoined the service in 1915. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 7th December, 1921.

No. 276.—Petition of John Owen, of Ohakune. Praying for compensation for injuries alleged to have been received by his daughter at the Ohakune School. I am directed to report that the Committee is satisfied that the accident occurred on the schoolgrounds, and, without determining the legal liability, recommends that, owing to the circumstances arising out of the accident, an allowance be made to the petitioner. This petition should therefore be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 12th December, 1921.

No. 304. —Petition of Mary Ann Freeman, of Auckland. Praying for compassionate allowance from the Education Department on account of the death of her late husband. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make regarding this petition. 21st December, 1921.

No. 199. —Petition of Hugh McLean Urquhart, of Ashburton. (Second Report.) Praying that Hugh McLean Urquhart and two others be compensated for hardship and monetary loss suffered in connection with an injury as a result of an explosion which took place during an experiment in a chemistry class at the Ashburton High School. I have the honour to report that the Committee is of the opinion that this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration of the following recommendations :— (1.) That a compassionate allowance of £250 be granted, the said amount to be expended as follows : Payment of doctors' fees disbursed by father of petitioner, £45 ; payment of legal expenses disbursed by aunt of petitioner, £65 ; to be administered by Education Department for the benefit of petitioner, £100 ; plus scholarship of £20 a year for two years, £40. (2.) That the Education Department be empowered to grant the petitioner two years' further tuition in a secondary school. (3.) That opportunity later be given the boy to enter the Government Service. 11th February, 1921.

Final Report. The Education Committee, consisting of fifteen members, has during the session held eleven meetings the average attendance at each meeting being ten members. Seven petitions were referred to and considered by the Committee; of these, two were reported to the House for " favourable consideration," and five were reported " No recommendation." The Committee also considered the Education Amendment Bill, which was reported to the House with amendments. 10th February, 1922.
